When the brain is exposed, such as after a craniotomy in neurosurgical procedures, we are provided with the unique opportunity for real-time imaging of brain functionality. The recent review by Soloukey et al. (2023), published in Frontiers in Neuroscience, discusses currently available clinical and experimental brain imaging techniques which could benefit from access to the exposed brain.
